Over a third of data recovery enquiries relate to data loss from digital cameras and photos.

Digital photo data loss...

Show a roll of camera film to a child or even a teenager and they will probably struggle to identify the intended use. We live in an age where are images are kept digitally and this means the storage of memories on cameras, phones, laptops and tablets.

From time to time we make a concerted effort to transfer and sort images we want to keep and use portable memory devices, but often the photos sit forever on the devices they were taken on. The problem comes when the smartphone breaks or the laptop hard drive becomes corrupt and we realise in horror that hundreds and possibly thousands of images are now lost. There is a solution for many digital photo loss scenarios so if you find you’re in this situation, it could be that all is not lost.

How we store our memories...
In the past, cameras held film for a limited number of photos. The film was sent for development and with much eagerness the resulting envelope of snaps was browsed and passed around the family for all to see and remember the time the memory was created. Often, photos would then be placed into albums and kept safe for revisiting at any time.

Photo storage in the 21st century is a very different affair and whilst many large supermarkets or chemists have machines for customers to print out photos from various storage devices, the vast majority of us either keep them on the original device or transfer them to portable storage equipment.

Some of the handheld devices used for digital photos are:

  • Camera
  • Video camera
  • Smartphone
  • Tablet
  • Laptop

Other than sharing to social media at the time of taking a photo, many people don’t ever secure the storage of their photos which sit on small memory cards in the device. The few that do however may place them on a portable USB stick which depending on the capacity could hold a few thousand image files.

Ways digital photos are lost...
Smartphones are often damaged beyond repair if a drink is spilled, laptops can suffer hard drive failure or be infected with a virus and any camera which is dropped can be inoperable. For the data storage method itself, a device with low battery can cause the storage to become corrupt and from then on in, the device is unable to ‘point’ at the image. It still exists in the memory but the lack of power to carry out the task has corrupted the path and the photo can no longer be viewed. Memory cards which are knocked out of place or ejected or inserted without care can quickly become damaged - as will be the contents on the card. Often the loss of digital photos can be as easy as accidentally pressing the delete button whilst scrolling through.

Even for those who are careful enough to use memory sticks, this doesn’t fully safeguard the photos. The usual problem when data corruption occurs is that the stick is pulled from a device without first enabling safe ejection; removing a USB storage stick out of a laptop for example can be very damaging if a couple of simple clicks aren’t first carried out.

Regaining the images...
To keep digital photos safe, management of the files on the device is important. Stay on top of deleting unwanted images and utilise the power of the Cloud to store important memories in the security of virtual storage. Many email providers now offer cloud storage as standard and you can quickly upload the photos, have peace of mind they can’t become lost and then clear the space from the memory card.

If you’ve suffered the panic and pain of accidentally deleting images or finding that they are lost from a damaged phone or corrupt card, there could be a solution. Data recovery experts can now recover huge amounts of lost files in a way which wasn’t possible even five years ago so if this has happened to you, talk to a specialist mobile phone data recovery company today. Once the images are recovered, store safely and make the promise to look after your memories of today so you can view them at any time again in the future.
