How to check a hard drive using the S.M.A.R.T. Interface.

Install the utility http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Display the information whether the drive supports S.M.A.R.T.

$ smartctl -i /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

Enable S.M.A.R.T., if disabled.

$ smartctl -s on /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

Check which SMART features the drive supports and which parameters are set.

$ smartctl -c /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

The drive status and the list of check attributes.

$ smartctl -H /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

$ smartctl -A /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

Run the off-line test

$ smartctl -t offline /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

Check for errors

$ smartctl -l selftest /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

Check in more detail

$ smartctl -r ioctl -i /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

Display the general statistics

$ smartctl -a /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0
