Hard Drive Recovery

Hard Drive Recovery (83)

b2ap3_thumbnail_iStock_000025043282XSmall.jpgNew hybrid storage devices combine advantages of HDD with those of SSD, thus providing high storage capacity, speed and cost efficiency.
Solid State Drives (SSD) are very fast on the one hand but on the other hand they are too expensive. Traditional HDDs are cost efficient and they have high storage capacity. However, they cannot match SSDs in speed and very often modern computers cannot show high performance because of a slow HDD. Hybrid Hard Disk Drives (H-HDD) solve this problem by combining high storage capacity, speed and reasonable price. Seagate was the first to introduce 2.5” hybrid storage device. Seagate Momentus XT has 500 GB of disk space and 4 GB of flash memory which facilitates higher performance. Hybrid drives are mainly installed in laptops since the latter as a rule cannot contain several disk drives.

b2ap3_thumbnail_iStock_000022846885XSmall.jpgSeparate sites of a magnetic disk can be magnetized in one of the two possible ways, which represent zero or one i.e. 1 bit. Such magnetized area is called a magnetic domain. It is a micro-sized magnet on the surface of the hard disk, which has certain orientation of southern and northern magnetic poles. To record one bit of data, a magnetic head creates specifically directed magnetic field which orients the domain. A magnetization vector of the domain remains unchanged for a long time after the magnetic head stops affecting the magnetic surface. Storage density (amount of information which can be stored in one unit of the plate surface) depends on the size of domains. Commonly used values of storage density are:

Self Monitoring Analysing and Reporting Technology

Raw Read Error Rate /CRITICAL ATTRIBUTE/ rate of errors while reading from disk; caused by hardware.

Throughput Performance – general disk performance. If its value hoes down, there is a high change of problems with disk.

Spin-Up Time /CRITICAL ATTRIBUTE/ Time required by stack of disks to spin-up from the state of zero-motion to operation speed.

Start/Stop Count – total number of starts/stops of spindle. Some disks (like Seagate) — energy-saving mode counter. Raw value field contain total number of starts/stops.

b2ap3_thumbnail_iStock_000003838560XSmall_20130801-154138_1.jpgMalfunctions in hard drive are critical for any computer system – in the event of malfunctions a user risks losing all data recorded to hard drive. It is very important to take care of hard drive and information on it. In this article we are going to tell you about preventive measures and tools with the help of which you will be able to ensure safe and secure operation of your hard drive.

How to maintain a hard drive

■ Create new partitions and manage existing ones – this way you will be able to maintain order on your hard drive and separate user content and system files.

■ Backup your data and backup system partition – if for some reasons operating stops booting, your data and system itself can be easily restored with the help of backup copy.
■ Do not forget to defragment your disk – it removes fragmentation of files and increases hard drive’s lifespan due to reduced movement of data read/write heads.

■ Clean your system and free disk space – it allows you to free disk space occupied by files that remained after installation/deinstallation of any program or temporary internet files.

■ Test with vendor programs – it will allow you to detect and correect various hard drive errors.

b2ap3_thumbnail_iStock_000016558131XSmall.jpgHard drive may not be detected in BIOS for a number of reasons. If you connected the hard drive yourself, then you should first check whether the interface cable or power cable is connected properly.

First lets discuss IDE interface of old hard drive models, however almost everything contained herein suits to SATA interface as well.

Power cable is connected to hard drive. Cable’s connector looks like a plug. If it was connected in a wrong way the LED indicator of hard drive’s activity on the mainframe will be always lit.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IBM350-300x300.pngThe very first computer hard drive became commercially available in September 1956. The model was called IBM 350 and was part of computer system 305 RAMAC. IBM 350 consisted of 50 aluminium disks 20 inches in diameter (610 mm) each, with 1200 RPM.

IBM 350 could store up to 5 MB of information. Today this capacity can only make you smile and at that time it was a technological breakthrough. One storage device kept information on its disks in the form of 62,500 IBM cards, and information could be accessed on this device faster than within a second, not after minutes as in case of magnetic tape-based data carriers.

b2ap3_thumbnail_iStock_000007935183XSmall.jpgIt is an extraordinary way to recover user data from hard drive. All you need to do is to shove your failed hard drive into the freezer for a day and then it will work for approximately 20 minutes or maybe even for half an hour. In all likelihood that will be enough for you to copy all the important data you require. It was once done by data recovery enthusiast from New York and he argues that the disk was alive after he took it out from the freezer.

A portable hard drive duplicator has been released by StarTech company. Using this device a process of cloning is easy and effortless and at the same time it does not require a computer. The device allows copying SATA interface drives and after copying is done you get two identical drives in which absolutely everything is same – sectors, partitions, boot sector information etc. If necessary, duplicator can be connected to computer – then it will work like an external dock for the hard drive.

b2ap3_thumbnail_iStock_000000670974XSmall_20130619-155128_1.jpgAbstract: Alex Blackwell, WD chief engineer in EMEA, speaks about little-known and remarkable technologies that are used in HDD today as well as about how strange and unexpected solutions would allow increasing the capacity in the future. Bonus: details about forthcoming WD’s hybrid drive.

Hard Drive — one of the most remarkable components of modern computer. Just imagine that we still keep data using magnetic and mechanical technology that exists since 50-ies of XX century and has seen both lamp electronics and phonerecords. Imagine that we live in an alternative Universe where hard drive has never been invented and all data is written to flash memory or other solid state data media. Then what would you say about a suggestion to save data as magnetized spots on a revolving disk where a writing head can precisely land on tracks the distance between which is equivalent in size of transistors created in integrated circuits with the help of a photo? Its impossible, too hard, not safe and fragile? No, it’s reality that we take for granted. An example of a technology initially brought to something unforeseeable, even absurdity.

b2ap3_thumbnail_iStock_000022671491XSmall.jpgIn hard disk drives each side of every magnetic disk has its own read/write head. All heads are mounted on a single framework and move synchronously.

The structure of framework with attached heads is relatively simple. Each head rests at the end of an arm that is mounted on a little spring. The spring slightly presses the head towards disk's magnetic surface.
