SSD drives - the optimal configuration and use

Your PC is equipped with a fast processor and a considerable amount of RAM, and even though Windows starts up too slowly. Probably the brakes hard drive the whole system, because the conventional technology used in hard drives so far just do not keep up with the other components of modern computers. Although the capacity of current drives crossed the border three terabytes, but in terms of transmission speed and access times could not be the last time to make great progress.

SSD (Solid State Disk) appear to be in the situation much better alternative. With this type of disk PC can get up to four times higher performance than with a regular hard drive. The following article explains why this is and what opportunities speed up your computer provide SSDs.

How does the SSD work?

Conventional hard disk collects the ferromagnetic plates. The head assembly allows both write and read addresses to either side of the rotating discs, capturing specific data. Meanwhile, in the model lie SSD flash memory chips, similar to those used in pendrives and SD card you use, among others the camera. The disk of this kind is therefore devoid of any moving parts such as rotary plates. For this reason, runs quietly and is very much resistant to mechanical stimuli. The decisive advantage of SSDs over conventional hard drives, it is above all an extremely short access times to stored data assets. In the conventional disk head read / write must first reach the right place. Files larger sizes are generally categorizes the fragments porozmieszczane in different places of the disc (this phenomenon is known as fragmentation), their writing and reading are relatively long. Meanwhile, flash memory allows direct appeal to each memory cell, which reduces access time. Besides, hard drives do not provide a constant speed of data transmission. When writing or reading discs areas closer to the outer edge passes through the head at the same time, more data than for the areas closer to the center. The difference can reach 10 to 20 MB / s

What kind of performance provides a solid state drive?

During laboratory tests very fast hard drive Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX received the order of speed 134 MB / s sequential read and write data. Save the MP3 file in 1000 (five gigabytes of data) on the hard drive took 54 seconds, and read it took 68 seconds.

The current test winner in the category of SSD, Patriot Wildfire 120 GB, reached when reading sequential score of 475 MB / s, and when writing 407 MB / s Putting on your MP3 files in 1000 claimed 23 seconds, and the reading of 21 seconds. As shown by this test, performance differences are quite substantial, which in practice will result in noticeably faster startup time of Windows and applications. If you want to personally measure the performance of hard disk or SSD drive, you can take advantage of free programs.

However, it should be noted that not all SSDs maintain such a high performance throughout the life. In some models, data rate drops significantly when you save a few (dozen) terabytes of data. It is believed that the SSD controller itself reduces performance to prevent saving a disproportionately large amount of data during the warranty period. Each memory cell can withstand only a certain number of write cycles, or delete content. SSD controller distributes write operations evenly across the memory cell. In the event of damage is a pool of reserve cells. However, with the ordinary operation of the SSD is not a note of that effect. For example, Intel declared its SSD lifespan of five years with a daily record of 20 GB of data. This is much larger than the average amount of data on a regular desktop computer use. Therefore, the actual life of the SSD may considerably exceed the stated period of five years.

Who will be useful SSDs?

SSD drives are now relatively expensive storage media, taking into account the price per gigabyte. Model with a capacity of 2 TB staggering price increases to several thousand. It is far too high as the ceiling price on your home computer. The acceptable price range (and thus to around $250) are solid-state drives with a capacity of 128 GB. Models falling 60 GB of data are already available for less than $150

60 or even 120 GB is very modest for the area as the Windows platform. Even the newly installed 64-bit version of Windows eats up about 10 GB. If you add some applications and multimedia library, quickly load in an area of 60 GB. And surely enough, if you significantly less capacity than 120 GB, you did not install too many applications, so do not even use the maximum capacity offered by a conventional hard drive.

Meanwhile, users who installed the programs to fotoedycji, installation of audio or video, or sophisticated programming environment for architectural or would receive the greatest benefits of SSD, but the currently available capacity is not sufficient for their needs. There are a few ways to get rid of the dilemma presented. Although the solution presented below does not allow to get quite as high efficiency as in the case to install a single SSD drive, but will help you find a reasonable compromise between speed of operation and available capacity.

Drive a hybrid

If you can not do without the large storage space, consider buying a hybrid drive. The disk of this kind combined with a conventional hard disk drive model, SSD in one box. Flash memory chips are often cited as a buffer of data. While this combination does not accelerate as much as using the system only SSD, but read operations are performed 33 percent faster. When write operations, would see no growth. 2.5-inch hybrid drive Seagate 750 GB Momentus XT now costs about $200 - $300, a model with a capacity of 500 GB will get now for about $150 - $180

Motherboard with Intel Z68

If your motherboard is equipped with Intel Z68, you can use your SSD in part or in whole as a buffer (SRT, the Smart Response Technology). In this way you can get an average performance increase of 40 percent in reading and writing operations. Although the aforementioned technology is currently limited to the Z68 chipset, but does not depend on hardware components. The implementation and maintenance of the buffer takes on a whole software, referring to the disk controller. How to set up such a buffer we describe in the rest of the material.

SSD hard drive and software-buffer

Not only Intel has designed the software to use a buffer consisting of a conventional hard disk and SSD. However, other manufacturers deliver their solutions almost only to companies that intend to speed up their servers with SSDs. The exception is the Synapse disc OCZ SSD Caching software offered Nvelo Dataplex buffering. Model with a capacity of 64 GB costs about $150, while the model with twice the capacity of approximately $250 Currently, no such software can be purchased separately without the SSD. Team consisting of the SSD and applications Dataplex is able to accelerate read and write almost to the rate achieved by the individual SSDs. Compared to the conventional hard disk drive allows for more than double the performance.
