• ESX Server will boot to a “#” prompt;
• Type “passwd” and set a new password for root;
• Type “reboot” to reboot.

Instead of reinstalling ESX Server in the event of root password is lost, follow the steps below:
• reboot the ESX and then enter “a” at the first menu;
• when prompted type in “single”;
• ESX Server will boot to a “#” prompt;
• Type “passwd” and set a new password for root;
• Type “reboot” to reboot.
