  • Extract backups to another partition. It will help to make sure that all backed up files are operable before possible rewriting of data on a functioning partition.
  • If RAID array failed, test backup copy on another drive or create an image of each RAID disk before starting array rebuild. Sometimes RAID rebuild works incorrectly and it may exacerbate the problem.
  • Do not create new files on the disk from which you intend to recover data as well as discontinue using virtual machines until the important data is recovered. New files may rewrite the files you need to recover if extraction from backup copy is not successful. Running virtual machines that use snapshots and thin virtual disks also may rewrite files that you need to recover.
  • Do not run diagnostics programs and file system correction programs like FSCK or CHKDSK on a virtual disk until you check the operability of backup files on another partiiton. Runnig these programs implies the presence of a working data backup copy, that is why they may rewrite file marks to correct file system consistency. Anyway, if running such programs if required, they may be launched in read only mode. It will allow finding serious damages before carrying out file system restoration procedure.

Tips on how to increase chances of successful data recovery when resorting to the provider of professional services

  • Do not delete files before the procedure of recovery of previously deleted files. Additionally deleted files may complicate the data recovery process.
  • Do not attempt to recover data with software if you are not sure that such software will or will not record to the disk from which you intend to recover data. Some data recovery applications record to the source disk and may considerably hinder later attempts to recover data.
  • If one virtual disk requires recovery but others continue operation on the same partition and cannot be closed during the recovery process, make a copy and transfer them to another partition. If a deleted virtual disk or snapshot requires recovery, better make a copy of virtual machines instead of transferring them. Therefore they won’t be recognized as deleted machines that require recovery.
  • Close or move any other active virtual machine on the same volume that use snapshots. Any record to new blocks on partition may rewrite the data that require recovery.

Data Recovery Expert

Viktor S., Ph.D. (Electrical/Computer Engineering), was hired by DataRecoup, the international data recovery corporation, in 2012. Promoted to Engineering Senior Manager in 2010 and then to his current position, as C.I.O. of DataRecoup, in 2014. Responsible for the management of critical, high-priority RAID data recovery cases and the application of his expert, comprehensive knowledge in database data retrieval. He is also responsible for planning and implementing SEO/SEM and other internet-based marketing strategies. Currently, Viktor S., Ph.D., is focusing on the further development and expansion of DataRecoup’s major internet marketing campaign for their already successful proprietary software application “Data Recovery for Windows” (an application which he developed).
