What does ext3 do when crash occurs due to the machine blackout in different operational stages of the file system?

  • If the power is turned off at the time of writing and damages the sector, the recovery of the data being written will be impossible;
  • The power reset during the writing may result in the subsequent receive of random patterns, but fsck is supposed to respond to this issue;
  • If a power failure caused data corruption in the sectors, the data integrity in the sector that was able to be written would be saved;
  • The same problems happen to any other journaling file system, for instance XFS.
